It’s the start of a new year and signicant changes are happening within the education sector.

After a long period of consultation, we are reliably informed that BB101’s new guidelines for air quality in classrooms will be released this year; the ESFA framework is now in place with a new Output Specication, and Government will continue its roll out of improvements to school environments through the £4.5bn budget.

In this issue, our feature story outlines the impact of BB101 amendments on school environments, the proposed changes, and how by clever design, Three Rivers Academy is already exceeding targets - positioning the design and construction team as leaders in innovative school design.

BIM for City North, London

Many of our public sector projects are now being designed to BIM Level 2, these design tools are now being extended in to our private sector work. Silcock Dawson are involved in several high profile residential lead developments for Telford Homes. The latest development at City North in London is being designed using BIM.

This stunning development will provide 308 one to four bedroom private apartments, from studios to penthouses, plus resident-only curated spaces. It will also include two striking 21-storey towers with 120,00 sq ft of premium commercial space, a multi-screen cinema, a state of the art fitness centre plus shops, gourmet restaurants, cafes and bars.

Silcock Dawson are designing the MEP services to the development in 3D using AutoCad Revit MEP.

The Quad student development, Norwich

Following the successful completions of their All Saints Green student accommodation project, Alumno Developments have appointed the same Team including Silcock Dawson to design The Quad, their new student accommodation development in Norwich.

The site is located on that of the former Mecca Bingo hall and Gaumont Club is currently unused. The proposed development will bring new life and vibrancy to the north end of All Saints Green and support the pedestrianisation of the city centre.

Alumno's scheme will provide 244 student bedrooms and facilities in a series of blocks ranging from 8 to 13 storeys above mixed-use ground floor, which are designed to complement and fit in with the surrounding built environment including Aviva's offices. The development will be a car-free scheme, using the site's proximity to Norwich Bus Station and location in the city centre.

The Energy Strategy developed by Silcock Dawson includes provision of a CHP reducing the CO2 emissions by over 17%.

New Development in Classroom Ventilation

Silcock Dawson, in collaboration with Gilbert Engineering, have developed a new combined ventilation and heating unit for use in classrooms to meet the revised BB101 standards required by the EFA.

The first installation of the new units will be at the currently under construction primary school, Selwyn Park, North London which is being built by Galliford Try.
