Westfield London is the largest ’in town’ shopping centre in Europe, and is expected to be a catalyst for the revitalisation of Shepherds Bush and the surrounding area.

Silcock Dawson has been responsible for the design of the Mechanical Services installations, including the Mall Cooling and Heating, Ventilation systems, Condenser water system serving the retail units, Drainage, and Hot and Cold water services. As the only services consultant working directly for Westfield as designers, we have also played a key role in the implementation of all building services on the project in an advisory and management capacity. Our design team managed by one of our Directors were based on site for the last two and a half years of the construction period with team numbers of engineers and CAD staff ranging up to twelve at the peak of the design works.

Extensive use of heat recovery both from the return air systems and condenser water has been incorporated into the scheme as well as the harvesting of rain water which is used for flushing WC’s in the public toilets.

Along with the Contractors we developed techniques to speed up the services installation, for example, the Condenser Water system pipework was installed in lightweight stainless steel which was pre-fabricated off site into modules which could easily be transported and moved around. This approach allowed faster installation with less labour on site, and overall worked out cheaper than using traditional materials.
